Firsts and Family Milestones

Firsts and Family Milestones

I find it hard to believe that it is 10 weeks since Bryce's accident. So much has changed and yet everything is the same. Those early weeks feel like a blur when Matt and I were spending up to 7 hours a day traveling and visiting Bryce in the hospital. Remembering that there were times when he could not sit up straight without feeling nauseous and vomiting. Today, he's wheeling himself about, out in the fresh air and adjusting to this new normal.

It's 2 weeks since he moved into rehab. Life looks very different for him compared to being stuck in a hospital ward. We all attended our first "Team" Meeting yesterday with his OT, Physio, Ward Nurse, and Clinical Social Worker. This was a most helpful and productive time, it allowed Bryce to talk about his goals moving forward and what he would like to be able to achieve while in rehab.

One of the main purposes of rehab is to teach the patient independence. Bryce wants to focus on 2 main areas, strength and flexibility. It's amazing how much a body can change in 2 months and how easily we lose muscle and flexibility.

For example, this week Bryce was learning to throw / roll a ball along a table. Sounds so silly to say but when you push something you are using more than just your arms, but your core too. Bryce no longer has a core below the belly button. It's exhausting just moving his body from the chair to the bed. But he's doing it.

It's been a week of firsts: first car ride, first shower, first trip home for the day.

On Sunday we were able to take him out for a few hours, of course, the boys opted for some movie time and Mom had to endure 2 Hours 45 mins of DUNE. I got teased because they did not know that it was possible to sleep through nuke fights, but I did it!!!

Last week was a very emotional week, celebrating our young man's 21st Birthday. A friend and I went through on the day and treated the ward to cupcakes. The day was not anything like I ever imagined but just getting to celebrate this beautiful life with my precious son was priceless.

He continues to amaze me with his strong mental attitude. And he told me, "Mom, as long as I can get my strength and flexibility back, I know that I am going to be mentally ok."

On another note, our beloved little Rufus is making small improvements every week and his physio is super confident in his ability to get back on his feet!!!

Many of you have asked about visits. I realize that getting to see Bryce in rehab is a challenge during the week but if you think you have time in your day then please just message me privately and I'll coordinate with you.

Thank you for your ongoing love and support and prayers.
Much love, Lisa
